EXCURSION TO THE ALBANIAN RIVIERA, HIMARA VILLAGE AND PORTO PALERMO CASTLE
Duration: 8 - 9 hours
Driving Distance:4 hours
Highlights: Panoramic drive through Albania Riviera, Visit the small coastal villages, Visit of Himara, Visit of Porto Palermo Castle
Meet with your guide at the port of Saranda and start the tour driving towards the famous Albanian Riviera. The narrow and curvy streets provide a panoramic view over the small stony beach areas from above.
Our first stop is the small coastal village of Borsh, where we stop for refreshments in a local bar, with a small waterfall in its garden area.
Borsh is the largest beach of the Albanian Riviera and its clear water stretches for almost 6 km. The hospitality of the villagers and the traditional grilled lamb are distinctive features found in Borsh.
After the refreshments, continue the panoramic drive towards the Porto Palermo Castle, situated in the closed bay of Porto Palermo, a few kilometers south of Himarë. It’s position makes nearly an island that is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land. The fort served as former Soviet submarine base during the communist regime in Albania, and nowadays its semi abandoned tunnel and barrack attract attention of visitors, as well as the stronghold walls and gates built by the powerful Ali Pasha of Ionina.
Following our driver, we reach the small city of Himara, which has two neighborhoods: Old Himara built on the hill, whose western side goes sharply to the sea, and New Himara in the gulf. It is a famous and very popular summer destination, known for its pebble beaches.
Enjoy walking in the city or relaxing by one of the beach areas.
Return transfer to the port of Saranda.
